Chapter Fifteen
Would an alien from a far-off planet, landing his spaceship on the village green cause more of a stir in Little Pondale?
The moment Breanna set foot on Lily Pond Lane, after crossing over from Seaside Road, curtains twitched in the chocolate-box cottages and heads popped up from behind hedges, all eyes studying 'the stranger in their midst'. But one or two people who were outside, tidying their gardens did at least wish her a good afternoon. She smiled and returned their greetings, admiring how neat and pretty all the gardens were and how twee the village was. It must have looked magical at Christmas, especially with all the snow. Children building snowmen, the quaint little pond to her left, no doubt covered with ice. Breanna loved Christmas. It would be wonderful to spend it in a place like this.
From out of nowhere, a young girl appeared beside Breanna. She was probably six or seven and wore a smart red coat. Her hair was the colour of melted toffee and she looked up at Breanna with big blue eyes and a friendly smile on her cupid's bow lips.
'Hello. My name's Daisy. What's yours?'
Breanna stopped and bent down to her level. 'Hello, Daisy. I'm Breanna. But everyone calls me Bree.'
The eyes grew even wider. 'Like the cheese? My mummy loves that cheese. I don't like it. But I do like sticking my fingers in it. It's all runny in the middle and feels like my model clay outside.' She giggled and clamped two small hands over her mouth. 'Oh. But I'm not supposed to do that.'
'It'll be our little secret.'
'Daisy?' A woman's voice called out from close by and a taller, older version of Daisy appeared from the driveway of one of the cottages. 'There you are. You know you shouldn't run off.'
'Sorry, Mummy. I came to say hello to the pretty lady.'
'Well next time, wait for me. Hi.' The woman smiled at Breanna. 'I'm Cathy, Daisy's mum. I hope she's not bothering you. You must be Bree. Mia and Ella's friend. And Mia's wedding planner, I believe.'
Cathy sounded as friendly and welcoming as her daughter. Breanna smiled, nodded and straightened up. 'Correct on all counts. Daisy's not bothering me at all. She gave me a wonderful welcome. It's lovely to meet you both.'
Daisy gave Breanna's coat a little tug. 'We're going to Jenny's to get cakes for tea. Jenny makes the bestest cakes.'
She pointed across the village green, beyond the pond to another quaint thatched cottage with a small shop window on one side, above which a sign announcing 'Lake's Bakes' swung gently in the afternoon breeze.
'Jenny makes the best cakes, sweetheart,' Cathy corrected.
Daisy gave a little frown. 'I know. I said she did.'
Cathy raised one brow and grinned at Breanna. 'Have you settled in? I haven't seen Willow Cottage, but I hear your nearest neighbour is a field away. If you ever want some company and Mia and Ella aren't around, my friend Christy and I live in Corner Cottage.
